  1. On September 13, I began the three-month journey at Fort Jackson’s CH-BOLC (Chaplain Basic Officer Leader Course). In doing so, I joined the ranks of those in active duty Army chaplaincy, a step made with great trust in God’s providential leading after ten years of civilian pastoral ministry. I have been thankful for the encouragement of many chaplains who have gone before me, and also for the strong friendships that are already being made here at CH-BOLC. We are currently still in the initial military training phase, and this past week has included Army rites of passage such as a visit to the CS gas chamber (what they now call “mask confidence”) and negotiating the ropes course at Victory Tower. Class time has focused primarily on the concept of developing “chaplain identity” and understanding the role of Army staff officers. There is a strong sense of mutual encouragement among our classmates, and it has been a privilege to pray for others I’ve met about both personal and professional matters. I have heard many times that Army friendships (especially those forged during training) can often last for life, and now I’m seeing this incredible process unfold for myself. As I am finding out, the needs of Soldiers and their families are indeed tremendous, and no needs are more essential than our spiritual needs. Prayers for our class of 42 chaplains are greatly appreciated, and for me personally, that Christ would be evident and glorified in my words and deeds during the weeks to come.
